  • PHOTOGRAPHY IS ABOUT THE LOCATION NOT ABOUT YOU

People while travelling like the idea of photography if they really like the place. They may like how you as the photographer see the place but they initially must like the place. To be a better photographer, stand in front of more interesting objects. Do your research. Explore the location, find out what’s interesting and what’s not. To create a great story, gallery or  album for your project; think of the finished story as your project. Make it a complete package for the viewer.

  • HAVE A RANGE OF SKILLS.

With travel photography you are expected to have an assortment of skills to be able to tell the whole story, capture the vibe, caption, include some  action and introduce characters to the audience. Brush up your skills, identify what you are good at and put more practice to areas you are not prolific in.

  • AIM FOR THE RANGE

Range here refers to colour, emotion, scale. For example, work with pictures with a really great colour palette so that when the page turns, the viewer experiences something different and fresh.

Pictures should have a really dominant colour. In terms of emotions, work with pictures that are “quiet”, with intense or surreal. Its good to have some pictures that are small, medium or large. This is crucial on while capturing the details or relaying a narrative.

  • THINK ON THE NEEDS OF THE DESIGNER

Depending on where you decide to publish your project, whether online or in print media, it’s important to consider the format in which your pictures will be taken. For magazines and other print mediums consider portrait or landscape options. Explore the different formats that work with platforms such as Instagram, Facebook and Tiktok. All of these platforms have different formats so be sure to use the one that works best for your final draft.

  • GO BACK

Go back to the same location, maybe go back when say the weather is different, or when the light is different. This will enable you to figure out what is different that would make the picture stand out. The idea is not to take more pictures but find one superlative picture. People will like that one picture that is so different that sets the bar so high and really works.
